Native American Heritage Day: A Celebration of Art and Culture

In honor of Native American Heritage Day, Arrow Senior Living proudly partnered with Reuben IronHorse-Kent through a collaboration supported by Haskell Indian Nations University. This partnership reflects our commitment to learning, celebrating culture, and growing together. We are excited to share this year’s featured art piece.

Honoring Culture Through Art

IronHorse-Kent, a member of the Buffalo Clan and a self-described “clay-maker” and “All-American kind of guy,” brings deep connection to his heritage.

Pit-fired clay bowl created by Reuben IronHorse-Kent for Arrow Senior Living, highlighting carved dot-and-line patterns inspired by Oneota cultural pottery traditions.

His family roots tie to the Ioway, Kickapoo, and Otoe communities throughout Kansas, Nebraska, and nearby regions. He works with clay to create pottery shaped by hand and simple tools. He then pit-fires each piece in the long-standing tradition of the Oneota culture.

His talent extends beyond pottery. His beadwork, paintings, and clay pieces appear in museums across the country. Chicago’s Field Museum, The Smithsonian American Indian Art Museum, and The Institute of American Indian Arts have all featured his work.

A Gift for Every Arrow Community

IronHorse-Kent crafted a clay bowl for every Arrow Senior Living community. Each bowl is one-of-a-kind and impossible to duplicate. When held, the piece fits naturally in your hand. You may notice the textured surface, the lined or pin-holed markings pressed into the clay, and even a faint earthy scent — a mix of clay and fire that speaks to its origins. Each community will display its bowl in the library so residents and visitors can enjoy the artistry up close.

Arrow Senior Living extends heartfelt thanks to Reuben IronHorse-Kent for partnering with us on this year’s Native American Heritage Day initiative. His care, creativity, and dedication shaped every piece, and we are honored to share them throughout our communities. Learn more about Reuben and this meaningful project here.
