Arrow’s McGatha Discusses Caregiver Burnout in Op-Ed Article

Category: Senior Living

Author: Shannon Novak Senior Managing Director of Marketing

Arrow Senior Living’s Licensed Clinical Social Worker Sandy McGatha recently published an
article focused on balancing the caregiver role and burnout. Her position as a contributor to
Arrow’s education team, liaison to families and residents, and provider of mental health
awareness gives her insight to the part caregivers play.
McGatha believes the role of being a caregiver for a loved one is a privilege, but it can also be a
very personal and bittersweet journey. Caregivers often sacrifice pieces of their own lives, losing
the relationship balance in the process. They often experience what is known as Caregiver
Burnout. Symptoms may include chronic health issues, exhaustion, sadness, and feelings of
helplessness.
She provides several ways to restore emotional energy as a caregiver:

  • Ask for help
  • Share the load
  • Connect with other caregivers
  • Take time to do the things you enjoy

McGatha reminds readers a caregiver’s job is not to suffer, but to care for themselves as well as
their loved one. To read the full article, with greater detail and insight, go to
