Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Katarina Vrhovac, Resident Experience Director

As Resident Experience Director at Arrow Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and even the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just nice—it’s essential for well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating a Sense of Belonging

Community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It’s about designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, each moment strengthens relationships and reminds residents that they belong.

Every interaction is a chance to build community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and benefit from the emotional and social boost that comes with genuine friendship.

Community means more than sharing a building. It’s knowing you are surrounded by people who care about you, look out for you, and want to share life together. It comes alive in simple moments—meals with friends, checking on a neighbor, celebrating milestones, or creating something by hand. It also shines in acts of service, such as writing letters to first responders or supporting local schools. These shared experiences bring comfort and remind residents they are never alone.

Building Connections That Last

Strong relationships create a warm, welcoming environment where everyone feels included. When residents connect with one another, they are more likely to join events, form friendships, and feel at home. Resident Ambassadors play a key role by greeting newcomers, encouraging engagement, and setting an example of connection.

We keep residents engaged by offering a wide variety of social, recreational, and interest-based events. From happy hours and beachball games to monthly service projects and group outings, there’s something for everyone. Our Resident Ambassadors help break the ice, introduce neighbors, and create an atmosphere where friendships form naturally.

Our communities also reach beyond our walls. We partner with local schools, churches, senior centers, and civic groups to build intergenerational experiences. Residents may receive handmade cards from students, attend concerts, volunteer, or enjoy outings to local shops and restaurants. By inviting the town into our communities and bringing our residents into the town, we help everyone stay active, engaged, and connected.

Some of my favorite events are happy hours, beachball games, and monthly service days. These gatherings are fun, lively, and full of laughter. They encourage teamwork, camaraderie, and joy—everything that makes community life meaningful.

The Heart of Community

We welcome new residents by pairing them with Resident Ambassadors, who act as friendly guides during the transition. From the start, newcomers are encouraged to join activities, meet neighbors, and take part in conversations. Whether over coffee, a card game, or a group outing, our goal is to create an inviting environment where everyone quickly feels at home.

At the heart of it all, connection is everything. Every shared moment, smile, and story enriches life in our community. As Resident Experience Director at Arrow Senior Living, I’ve seen how these efforts transform daily life—turning our building into a true home and creating memories residents and families treasure.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events—we build a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. It’s the connections we nurture that make all the difference.
