Across the world, people are living longer than ever before. However, according to the World Health Organization, “evidence suggests the proportion of life in good health has remained broadly constant, implying that the additional years are in poor health.” Taking a proactive approach to aging can help us live full, energetic, and healthy lives no matter how many years we have lived.
As the Regional Director of Wellness at Arrow Senior Living. I champion proactive aging as a simple framework intertwining wellness, learning, engagement, and security. Remaining physically and mentally active empowers seniors to embrace aging proactively. Fostering a sense of safety involves socializing and maintaining routines that prompt others to notice and inquire if absent.
Managing stress and anxiety encompasses a variety of strategies. It’s okay to express emotions like crying, which is a natural coping mechanism. If secluded indoors, consider venturing outside for a walk. Dining with friends instead of eating alone can also alleviate stress. Discovering what works best requires experimentation and a willingness to try new approaches.
The research underscores the adverse effects of stress and anxiety on health.
Fear often deters individuals from seeking preventative care, whether it’s fear of potential diagnoses or the testing process itself. The benefits of preventive care are numerous, including improved quality of life, reduced risks, early detection of health issues, and increased longevity.
Encouraging proactive thinking involves sharing personal experiences. People resonate with individuals who have acted rather than just talking about it. Leading by example is a potent motivator, demonstrating the effectiveness of proactive behavior.
It is never too late to invest in your health. Taking control of our well-being can be the difference between surviving and thriving, the difference between extra years of truly living and extra years in decline. Make your years count. Approach aging proactively and use those extra years to get another degree, take up a new hobby, break a record, or explore opportunities you never thought you would get to experience.
