Refreshing the Community

Category: Uncategorized

Author: Justin Roberts, Senior Regional Director of Plant Operations

As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of the community: landscaping. From the perspective of a Plant Operations Director, beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They require planning, preparation, and consistent attention to detail. After the challenges winter can bring, I take a proactive approach to refreshing and enhancing our outdoor spaces. The goal is to create an environment that feels safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone. As Senior Regional Director of Plant Operations for Arrow Senior Living, I’m excited to share the strategies we use each spring to keep the Home Office looking its best.

Preparing for a Seasonal Refresh

At the Home Office, our spring refresh begins with a detailed walkthrough of entry points, walkways, and outdoor gathering areas. Because our landscaping mainly features potted plants, we focus heavily on plant condition, cleanliness, and overall presentation.

First, we address safety concerns such as clear walkways and proper visibility at entrances. Next, we refresh seasonal containers and replace plants that did not survive the winter. Finally, we complete decorative updates and finishing touches as needed.

This spring, our team completed a full refresh of the exterior pots and entryway spaces. In early April, we removed old plant material, installed seasonal flowers, and cleaned and repositioned containers. We also partnered closely with our vendor to select plants that were attractive, low maintenance, and well suited for the environment. These updates created a polished appearance and strengthened the welcoming atmosphere for employees and visitors.

Maintaining Consistency Throughout the Season

To keep every exterior area consistent, we follow a structured checklist process. We confirm that containers are refreshed, cleaned, positioned correctly, and watered properly. In addition, we use TELS to track tasks, monitor progress, and maintain accountability throughout the season. Final walkthroughs help ensure the work meets expectations and that no details are missed.

Spring startup often brings challenges such as plant loss, soil degradation, and watering inconsistencies. Containers may also need cleaning or repositioning after winter weather. To stay proactive, we replace plants early, refresh soil, and establish consistent watering schedules. We also work with vendors to select durable plants that provide longer-lasting color and require less maintenance.

Looking ahead, we plan to further simplify and standardize our seasonal pot program. This includes refining watering procedures, coordinating earlier with vendors, and choosing even more resilient plant varieties. By continuing to use tools like TELS, we can maintain accountability while creating a clean, professional appearance with strong curb appeal year-round.

It’s easy to notice the finished product, but the real success comes from the coordination, accountability, and pride our team brings to the process. These efforts help Arrow Senior Living maintain the standards our residents expect while creating a welcoming environment for the seasons ahead.
